For 37 years and 10 months, since January 1983, I have been teaching at Carletonville High School. In 1993, I became HOD for Mathematics and held the position for 27 years. I was mainly a Mathematics teacher for Gr. 10 – 12 pupils. I marked matric papers for 30 years.

It was involved in chess as an extracurricular activity where my players excelled and for years our school produced provincial chess players. We have been the league winners for many years, and as for sport I coached long jump.

I met my wife here at Callies and we teach together until 2006 after which she accepted a position at Potch Boys High.

For me, teaching was an absolute calling and I really enjoyed every moment of it. We as teachers are people who touch our learner’s lives every day and therefore we must be good role models for them. I have worked with wonderful math teachers in my department and will never forget them.

My wife and I will retire in Danabaai, Mossel Bay. We look forward to long hikes on the beach and any route in the Outeniqua Mountains.

Callies was very good to me. Many children have gone through my hands in almost 38 years. Many seeds have been planted and may the outcome be good for our society and our country. I enjoyed every moment of it.

Mr. Piet Broodryk was a legend at Callies, one of the best math teachers ever and a wonderful colleague.  He will indeed be missed. Enjoy the retirement.
